. A Japanese bulk carrier carrying 200 tonnes of diesel and 3,800 tonnes of fuel oil, ran aground on the reef. Authorities have confirmed that fuel is leaking from a crack in the hull and there are concerns that rough seas will break the ship apart further.
The people of Mauritius depend on its seas for food and for tourism, boasting some of the finest coral reefs in the world.
“There is no guaranteed safe way to extract, transport and store fossil fuel products. This oil leak is not a twist of fate, but the choice of our twisted addiction to fossil fuels. We must react by accelerating our withdrawal from fossil fuels.
